In the beginning there was a puppet

Hakemuksen tiivistelmä

In the beginning there was a puppet – essays and reviews on puppetry is a book consisting of short theoretical texts on the various aspects of puppetry art and reviews on outstanding shows of so called "figurative theatre". The fragmentary nature of the essays allows freedom to freely change the genre and tone of the conversation with the reader - from serious and academic to artistic and poetic. Puppetry is one of the most rapidly developing art forms in Finland and in Europe. Not just puppeteers but also contemporary dance, cirque nouveau and visual theatre makers are widening their scenic language by adding into their shows variety of “manipulated images”. Performing art creators insist on using objects, figures and puppets (brought into life) to convey to the audience their personal/ social/political messages. A puppet is a very vengeful creature. It can fill the show with new meanings, or maybe impoverish it. In short texts I will reflect on a puppet specific and explore how does it work. General theatre knowledge is compulsory but not enough for "reading puppetry" and/or writing about it. Puppetry directing is obviously underrated, unexamined, undeformulated profession. It remains a miracle. Is there any special knowledge or unique skills one has to possess before inviting a puppet to act on stage? Shortly, is there any specifics in directing or watching shows with a non-human actor? The book can be considered as a manual for professionals, but it might be useful and inspiring for anyone interested in visual theatre - spectators and professionals alike. The written texts will be dedicated to historical, educational, artistic and practical aspects of the profession.
