The main aim of this 2-year long art-science collaboration is to cultivate a speculative commitment to postdisciplinary and ecofeminist care. The question of caring — and, in particular, caring for phenomena such as the atmosphere, which are imperceptible to our senses — will be used throughout the project as a central methodological approach. Asking: How can we care for what is inaccessible to direct experience, but still structures our daily lives? this inquiry envisages air and atmosphere as technoecological phenomena. These qualities of air are made explicit through three case studies: ‘As the air became this number’, ‘From aurora to geospace’ and ‘The new electronic ecosystem’. The grant will be used to, applying insights from our initial case study, develop and finalize the two others. Our final objective is to use the three examples to generate diverse but interrelated material (audiovisual installations, performance), textual (peer-reviewed and experiment writing) and pedagogical outcomes, that turn the theoretical notion of care into examples and tokens of practical commitment to (atmospheric) care. In order to produce collaboration, formats and outcomes with a strong feminist, posthumanist and queer emphasis we have invited gender scholar Liu Xin and curator Taru Elfving to accompany this work. Loppuraportin tiivistelmä Towards Atmospheric Care is an interdisciplinary collaboration between artist researcher Hanna Husberg and interdisciplinary researcher Agata Marzecova that combines artistic and scientific inquiry with feminist methodologies to examine how air and atmosphere are entangled with uneven social, ecological, and technological relations. It does this through three situated studies exploring the politics, aesthetics, and science of air: As the Air Became this Number (2017–20); From Aurora to Geospace (2018–2021); and New Electronic Ecosystem (ongoing). The project makes visible and raises questions concerning what situated human-atmospheric relations of care might look and feel like, and could be done in practice, when air is difficult to measure and sense. The project resulted in both artistic and research outcomes, including exhibitions (Often people ask how birds are affected by the air [2017–22]; From Aurora to Geospace [2020–22]), lecture performances (A is for Aurora, C is for Care: A daring vocabulary for sharing why geospace matters [2020–22]; This new air, the one we talk about a lot [2017–19]), and workshops (Heavens Field_Notes, 2019; Fantasies of Seamless Interoperability, 2021; How to care for air? Thinking Lab, 2022). It also led to publications such as We thought it was fog, we thought it was just some weather: sensing, datafication and governance of urban air pollution (Transcript Publishing, 2023); Beyond 5G: Notes from Finland (Mediapolis, 2022); And then came this number PM2.5: Atmospheric particulate matter, sociotechnical imaginaries and the politics of air quality data (Environment and Planning C: Politics and Space, 2022); Changing imaginaries and new technoecologies of urban air (The Routledge Handbook of Art, Science & Technology Studies, 2021); The Chat Set (das weisse haus, 2020); As Air Became this Number (Schloss-Post, 2019); and Sick air in the making of smart cities (RTV Magazine, 2019). https://towardsatmospheric.care/ Takaisin apurahalistaukseen
