The Aesthetics of the Occult

The Aesthetics of the Occult is a transdisciplinary network of artists, curators, and researchers working across installation, performance, ecological practice, and speculative narration. The project explores how artistic practices can engage with forces that operate beneath or alongside dominant systems of knowledge through material processes, ritual, and site-responsive work. At Saari Residence, the group will develop a collective working process that moves between individual and shared practices. Drawing on ecofeminist thinking, hauntology, and technomagical perspectives, the project approaches the occult as a complex and layered site of transformation, comparable to processes of composting or fermentation. Through regular collective sessions spanning ritual practices, alternative myth-making and discussion, the artists will explore alternative narratives rooted in embodied and situated knowledge. Site-responsive walks, listening practices, and engagement with local materials will allow the surrounding environment and its more-than-human agencies to act as an active collaborator in the process. The residency focuses on developing a shared methodology rooted in material experimentation, embodied knowledge, and collective thinking. The project creates a framework for ongoing collaboration, where ideas and forms can evolve across contexts and future presentations.
