Postdoctoral research project “New Spaces for a New Society”

Tieteellinen tutkimus ja taiteellinen työ / niihin pohjautuva työ | Kaksivuotinen

The research project “New Spaces for a New Society” consists of two interconnected projects: 1. Building of the architectural artwork – the Bolthouse – an experimental, hexagonal, zero-energy, log-building with earth roof, in collaboration with architect Pitkäranta and invited artists. The house will be small, ca 70 m2, and in this way, it also coincides with the interest in society to build smaller and more ecological. This house will in its basic form, be reproducible. But in addition, I will research new ways of how art interventions can create a personal, connected space for the building. It is planned to be built beside the Life on a Leaf house – now a residency – in Turku. The planning period starts in the autumn of 2019 and the house would be built in 2021-22. I will apply for grants for the artistic interventions and the planning, including seminars etc. The actual building of the house will be financed by a personal loan. 2. Writing the book New Spaces for a New Society. The book will be based on my earlier books WILD – Fantasia ja arkkitehtuuri, WOW – Åsikter om finländsk arkitektur and Life on a Leaf – My House as a Total Artwork. The new book will focus more on the theory behind different concepts of space and place and I will discuss the role of art in creating architectural space. The book is meant to be used in education (art, design, architecture).
