Bulges and meteorites

I use sci-fi to find ways to talk about crisis, and to try out new modes of encounter that are less violent. In 2022 I will get closer to the meteorites I met in 2021, in two ways. Firstly I will develop a sequel to my video Subserotic Bulge, which traced the tumours that grew in my trans non-binary uterus after I ate meteorite dust. The sequel will go deeper into the failure of my MRI scans, asking if the blocking of the scanner’s signal might be more than a simple refusal, and exploring whether the vibrations of the magnetised tumour are a form of communication. Secondly I will continue my slow but increasingly intimate relationship with an AR asteroid, and bring a new version of my Instagram guided (and interrupted) tour to a Helsinki venue. During both projects I will learn new technical skills so that I am no longer reliant on pre-existing mobile phone apps, and both projects will extend my work with accessibility supports.

This grant from Koneen säätiö was used to continue my work with trans bodies, relations, and healthcare. I do this using a semi sci-fi approach that tracks my changing relationship with celestial bodies, primarily meteorites. Koneen säätiö’s working grant enabled my artist residency at HIAP, during which I developed a solo exhibition "Off-Colour" for HAM Galleria including a new video and a new sculptural installation. It also supported my ongoing work with mobile phones, AR apps, and other interface technologies, leading towards a larger-scale project in 2023/24.
