Vuoden Tiedekynä Academic Writing Award

The annual Vuoden Tiedekynä award is designed to promote academic writing in Finnish and the accessibility of scientific discoveries as well as to increase the appreciation of academic articles written in Finnish. Vuoden Tiedekynä is one of the biggest academic writing awards in Finland.

The award is presented on a rotating basis to an author or authors of an article written in Finnish in the fields of humanities, social sciences and environmental research. To qualify for the award, articles must be published in scientific journals or collections, ideally ones that use referees. In the field of environmental research, the award can also be presented to the author of a scientific book. Only works published up to three years prior to the year of awarding are eligible.

One of our aims is to promote the status of Finnish as an academic language. It is important from the perspective of maintaining and developing Finnish thinking that scientific research can also be discussed in Finnish and that the basic concepts and terminology used in different academic fields exist in scientists’ native language. The more intelligible scientific findings are, the better they can also be used to benefit different spheres of society.

The financial and human resources available for scientific publications in Finnish are currently extremely limited. Publishing printed journals in particular has become increasingly difficult financially due to the rise of online publications. Moreover, the tendency of researchers to focus on publishing international articles in order to further their careers has resulted in a decrease in the number of articles submitted to Finnish publications.

The Kone Foundation Board of Trustees appoints one individual each year to choose the winning author or authors.
