“Saareke” won the vote about the name for the facility that Saari Residence had rented from the Y-kulma building in Mynämäki. The opening ceremony of Saareke was held in April 25th, and the programme of the evening included a performance by the poet and performing artist Merima Didzarević and circus artist Kalle Lehto, who both worked in the Saari Residence during March and April.
Saareke is used until the end of September, and during the six months it will host communal activities such as the Mynämäki night school as well as various public events, such as exhibitions of works by guest artists of the Saari Residence and workshop activities. In addition, the young entrepreneurs of the local 4H organisation handled the catering.
During the opening ceremony, the programme of the Mynämäki night school was published, and immediately after the ceremony the first class of the night school was held. In the class, Essi Saukko and Jukka Salonen gave a lecture on the topic “What is a Viking?” They presented the weapons and suits related to the topic and also demonstrated tablet weaving.
Locals have shown interest in the new facility, and they have also actively participated in the naming of the facility and suggesting experts for the Mynämäki night school. In total, 83 name suggestions were submitted, and 53 experts and talents were suggested for the night school. 12 persons of skills and knowledge were chosen for the Mynämäki night school, and events will be organised every other Wednesday, starting on April 25th between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
The following experts will hold the classes of the Mynämäki night school. Essi Saukko and Jukka Salonen (vikings), Sanna Akkanen (zumba), Toni Beckman (vipers and their handling), Kaisa Hilska (animal trainer), Matti Immonen (making of a bath broom), Marjo Jaakkola and Maija Penttilä (landrace chicken), Anita Julin (Finnish language, dialects), Aila Rannikko (traditional fishing), Niina Santio (cancer research and genetics), Raili Selinheimo (spindle spinning), Laura Varjo and Jarmo Kankaanranta (group singing), and Kirsti Vuorinen (straw mobile).
