During the residency in Saari, I’ll be composing a musical piece as part of my master’s degree, which I’m pursuing in Brazil, in the poetics of musical creation at UFRJ. I’m developing artistic research involving the composition of the piece “Plankton Muse” for a big band formation. I’m composing based on the sonification of data from the research on the dynamics of Baltic Sea Phytoplankton life, provided by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). This research is guided by Partitional Analysis and its concepts, with the aim of working on sonification in the field of texture. This project is inserted in the context of the United Nations’ Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), aiming to contribute to awareness about the health and sustainability of oceans.

In addition to my main research, I am composing small pieces for trombone, called “Meditative Studies”, focusing on expanded technique, multiphonics, which consists of singing while playing the instrument.

Jonas is a composer, arranger, and tenor/bass trombonist, holding a bachelor’s degree in trombone from Unirio. He is currently a master’s student in the poetics of musical creation at UFRJ in Rio de Janeiro under the guidance of Professor Pauxy Gentil-Nunes.

Throughout his over 20-year career, he has played and recorded with groups, projects, and artists such as Egberto Gismonti, Itiberê Orquestra Família, Hermeto Pascoal, Bibi Ferreira, Arthur Verocai, Liliana Herrero, Sebastião Tapajós, Amazônia Jazz Band, and is currently a contracted musician by Musiversal.

He was awarded by FAM in 2012 with the collective of wind composers, Inventos. In 2013, he won the Funarte Award for Brazilian Music. He did an artistic residency at Terra Una by Ibermusica (2017). In 2023, his piece “Bata para meu pai” won the Enrique Crespo Composition Contest (URUBRASS). He won the CBTIJ Children’s Theater Award (2020) in the categories of best musical direction and best original music with the children’s play “Ombela a origem das chuvas”. He was also nominated for the best soundtrack category by the Cenym Theater Award in 2020 with the play “Lupita”.
