The open call for Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence for artists will open again in March. Professional artists from all disciplines can apply for a residency for 2023 using the online grant service. The application period starts on 1 March and ends on 31 March 2022 at 4 p.m. Only applications submitted via the online grant service during the application period will be considered.

Located in a beautiful and peaceful rural setting, the Saari Residence is designed to provide artists from all fields of art with the opportunity to become fully engrossed in their work without distractions. Participants in the residency are encouraged to delve into their artistic work and to develop potential new directions for it by side with the other residents. The residence’s long-term activities and thinking are underpinned by an ecological approach, which also covers social and mental sustainability. The key words are slowness, insight and change.

During the individula residencies, there are eight artists and one researcher working at the Saari Residence at a time. For each residency period, our aim is to select Finnish and international artists representing different fields of art, both young artists and ones who are further along in their career.

Groups are also welcome to apply for a residency period of 2 to 4 weeks during the summer months.

The residency includes either an experience-based monthly grant for individual artists for a two-month period, or a weekly work grant for members of a working group for a shorter period.

Artists travelling sustainably to the Saari Residence from abroad can apply for support for their slow travel expenses and also receive a work grant for the duration of the journey. The slow travel grant must be applied for at the same time as the general residency grant; you cannot apply for it retrospectively.

Last year, 802 individual artists and working groups from 77 different countries applied for the residency. Over the past six years, the average award rate for residencies at the Saari Residence has been 5–6%.

Residencies for 2023 will be published on 15 June.
