Statistics and listings of grants, prizes and donations awarded in 2023

In 2023, Kone Foundation awarded grants, prizes and donations totalling over EUR 55 million.    

The total sum of EUR 55 131 729 granted by the Foundation includes the following funding:

  • The general grant call, EUR 44,212,550
  • Metsän puolella initiative (”In the Woods”) EUR 4,936,500
  • Saari Residence grants, EUR 360,304
  • Awards, donations, grant increases and other funding, EUR 5,622,375

The general grant call of 2023

A total of EUR 44,212,550 million and 350 grants were awarded through the general grant application round of 2023. Kone Foundation’s Board of Trustees decided on the grants on 1 December 2023.

A total of 6,684 applications were submitted for the general application round that took place between 1-15 September.

Of the EUR 44.2 million granted, 59.4% was awarded for research projects, 25.0% for art projects, 15.0% for projects combining art and research and 0.6% for other cultural work.

Of the 350 grants, 161 were awarded for art projects, 151 for research projects, 36 to projects combining research and art, and 2 to other cultural projects.

Of the 350 grants, 236 were given for multi-year projects and 95 were given for a duration of one year or less.

Award rates in the general grant call of 2023

Calculated from the total number of applications, 5.2% of the applicants were awarded a grant.

  • The award rate for research projects was 6.4%.
  • The award rate for art projects was 4.7%.
  • The award rate for projects combining art and research was 5.3%.
  • The award rate for other cultural work was 0.9%.

In the general grant application round, 6.6% of the total sum applied for was granted.

  • The award rate for research projects was 8.3%. 
  • The award rate for art projects was 4.8%.
  • The award rate for projects combining art and research was 6.7%.
  • The award rate for other cultural work was 1.2%.

Metsän puolella (“In the Woods”)

Kone Foundation’s new initiative Metsän puolella “In the Woods” for forest-related topics was launched in June 2023. The call for proposals is ongoing and open all year round. The Foundation’s board makes funding decisions three times a year. The first round of funding decisions (20 projects) was made on 9 June 2023 and the second round (15 projects) on 1 December 2023.

In 2023, a total of EUR 4,936,000 was awarded to a total of 35 projects.

Applications to the Saari Residence

A total of 26 artists and 9 working groups were selected for the Saari Residence in 2023 out of 1 064 applications received from 86 countries. The award rate for residency places was 3.3% out of the total number of applicants. Kone Foundation’s Board of Trustees decided on the residency grants on 9 June 2023.
