Get ready for autumn’s grant call!

Our grant application call will be open after the summer holiday season, taking place on 1–15 September. In addition to grants for arts and research, Finnish art and research organisations who wish to invite a colleague from abroad to work with them can apply for residencies at the Lauttasaari Manor. Kone Foundation grantees can also apply separately for additional funding for environmentally responsible encounters.






Kone Foundation awards annual grants for research and the arts, as well as projects combining the two. The Foundation seeks bold initiatives, by which we mean the ability to view current concepts from a different perspective and to challenge them. We believe this will add to our collective understanding of the world. Our perception of boldness includes experimentation, incompleteness and non-predetermination. We also allow grant applicants the freedom to define for themselves what boldness means in their particular project. We encourage applicants to engage in multidisciplinary cooperation.

 

Please note the dates of our application and grant-counselling sessions, as well as of our “open doors” event for grant applicationn

In August, we will organise two informational events at which you can learn about the application process and hear tips on developing your ideas, putting together a team and completing your application. In addition, we will organise an open doors event at which we will answers questions about the application process, without need for an appointment.

  • The informational events for grants will be held on Wednesday 21 August, from 9 to 11 a.m. (in Finnish) and from 3 to 5 p.m. (in English).
  • The open doors event for grant applications will be held on Wednesday 11 September, from 2 to 5 p.m.

These events will take place at Lauttasaari Manor (Otavantie 10). A barrier-free entrance to the building is located on the Kauppaneuvoksentie side. The informational events will have room for roughly the first 70 visitors, and there is no need to register beforehand. In August, you can book an appointment for a 20-minute discussion on grants with Executive Director Anna Talasniemi (art and culture grants), Director for Research Funding Kalle Korhonen (research grants) and Project Coordinator Maija Karasvaara (general questions concerning grant applications).

The days of these counselling sessions are:

  • Wednesday 7 August from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Thursday 29 August from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Wednesday 4 September from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Wednesday 11 September from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

During the application period, we kindly request that applicants contact us either by email or via our chat portal on our online grant service, instead of by phone.

 

The residence at Lauttasaari Manor makes international collaboration possible for Finns operating in the academic and artistic spheres

Finnish organisations in the fields of art and research that wish to invite a foreign expert in art or research to Finland for a cooperative project are welcome to apply for residency at Lauttasaari Manor for their guest. The residency includes an apartment in the Red Villa (in the manor’s courtyard) and a work grant, as well as a grant to cover the organisation’s expenses related to the visit, if necessary, and a working space, if needed.

The purpose of the Lauttasaari Manor’s residence activities is to foster true collaboration between local and international professionals in the fields of art and research. The residency promotes working, networking and international collaboration among professionals by making it possible for foreign art and academic research experts to live and work in Finland.

Applications for Lauttasaari Manor residencies are accepted for a period of 1 to 4 months, between April 2020 and April 2021. Please include your desired duration and dates of the residency in your application.

 

Special funding call for environmentally responsible encounters

Alongside this autumn’s funding round, a special funding call will be arranged for grantees of the foundation, as well as for artists arriving at the Saari Residence in 2020, with the aim of encouraging environmentally responsible encounters.

Travel related to art and research is a substantial source of emissions. Kone Foundation has compensated for emissions resulting from such encounters by establishing the Kulla Nature Reserve, but because avoiding emissions is even more important than compensatory measures, we are organising this special funding call.

With this application, you can apply for funding for more sustainable travel, which is often more expensive than flying, or for organising virtual conferences and meetings. The funding period for the Kone Foundation grant must still be ongoing when the trip, conference or other related activity takes place.
