Residency artists and researchers Dance Päivi Järvinen & Timo Väänänen (Duo Mitrej) Dancer, choreographer & Doctor in Music At the Saari Residence, Päivi Järvinen and Timo Väänänen, or Duo Mitrej, intend to create a new music and movement performance that is founded on text, light, picture and space. Now, after three days, the spatial and scenic richness of the Saari Residence has flooded our eyes, ears and bodies. At the moment, we are working on the Manor’s lower waterfront meadow – primarily in a tree – with a camera, silk, sound, a kantele (a Finnish zither-like instrument), movement and nature. The new work is a combination of video and audience performance. We are strongly inspired by textiles, light, the three-dimensionality and depth of field of two-dimension pictures, the pioneer of modern dance and theatre lighting Loïe Fuller (1862–1928), Kai Donner’s book on the Nenets people in Siberia (Siperian samojedien keskuudessa 1911–1913 ja 1914), Karelian inventor and performer Maisulan Mitrej or Dimitri Taronen (1861-1940), collector of folk tradition Armas Otto Väisänen (1890–1969) and the kantele-playing skomorokhs of medival Russia. It is truly wonderful to have this opportunity to focus on artistic work. Päivi Järvinen: dance, movement, voice, textile Timo Väänänen: music, kantele, video, photography
