Media and video art

Jenni Kokkomäki

Performance artist

At the Saari Residence, I will be working on a video installation that takes a look at power and power relations as a performance. The installation contains a series of videos that strive toward a multifaceted discussion about the processes related to the creation and perception of power. The installation continues in the footprints of video performances by body artists in the 1970s, and investigates questions regarding the performance of media-constructed self from a modern point of view. The investigational approach to the video works will be founded particularly on texts by performance theoreticians, researchers of visual culture and social scientists with a focus on the subject of power. I will also be putting my experience in theatre (power in speech and the physical manifestations of social status) and dance (the choreography, movement and gestures of power) to good use in the preparation of the filmed performances.
