Socialist Realism and Art in Soviet Estonia: Collaboration and Resistance”: a monograph on the impact of Socialist Realism on Estonian art between 1944-1956 and during the following decades.

My research in this wonderful Saari Residence is connected with strange and hidden topic of Socialist Realism in Estonian art context. Here is a painting from my favourite artist Roman Treuman (1910–1962), small piece called Agitator Amongst the Voters, 1952.

Camouflage is a reality which is not what it seems”. By Ortega Y Gasset was camouflage described by way of the idea of a mirage. But we know that the problem of the mirage is not “representation” but incarnation: though visible and present in the here and now, the image needs to be incarnated. The problem before me therefore involves not only the image, but even more how to translate it into reality.
