Filming of the movie AFTERCARE

Application summary

AFTERCARE is a film about caregiver burnout, the fury it sparks… and whales. In the West, caregiving often falls heavily on individuals, particularly those doing invisible reproductive labor. But now, they’ve found an unexpected ally: the orcas of the Mediterranean. Together, they are resisting. Through the lens of three caregiving communities – a women’s choir, a pod of orcas, and a motorcycle gang of nurses – AFTERCARE examines the emotional and planetary landscape of burnout. This non-linear documentary roams the globe like a satellite, gathering fragments of resistance and glimpses of potential futures. It blends absurdity with surprising connections, challenging our perception of care as an individual problem. The story unfolds through two narrators: a menopausal Earth and a futuristic pirate radio station. Radio Cetacean’s “call-in-show" offers a space for imagined communities, envisioning more sustainable paths to caregiving.
