I am writing the first draft for my new fantasy fiction novel set in the Iron Age. The novel is intimately linked with prehistoric research. The novel’s fantasy elements are derived from folklore so that the Iron Age worldview is presented to the reader primarily through fantasy and magic, and only secondarily through historical facts. I will be combining my in-depth cultural anthropological and archaeological knowledge with Finnish mythology in order to create a Finno-Ugric fantasy story. The novel’s working title is Rautakynsi (”iron claw”).

Today, the core audience for fantasy fiction is typically young adults. I am, however, writing for an adult reader who is not only interested in the social use of power, body norms and gender-specific expectations, but who enjoys the type of unpredictability that stories with elements of fantasy allow for.
