Statistics and listings of grants, prizes and donations awarded in 2022

In 2022, Kone Foundation awarded grants, prizes and donations totalling over EUR 48 million.    

The total sum of EUR 48 055 033 granted by the Foundation includes the following funding:

  • The general grant call, EUR 38,604,380
  • Thematic grant call 2022: The current state and challenges of Finnish democracy, EUR 3,902,900
  • Saari Residence grants, EUR 234,403
  • Awards, donations and other grants, EUR 5,313,350

The general grant call of 2022

A total of EUR 38,604,380 million and 335 grants were awarded through the general grant application round of 2022. Kone Foundation’s Board of Trustees decided on the grants on 2 December 2022.

A total of 6,153 applications were submitted for the general application round that took place between 1-15 September. A total of 335 individuals, working groups or communities received a grant. The projects awarded a grant involve 568 grantees, as well as some wage earners and other members.

Of the EUR 38.6 million granted, 59.3% was awarded for research projects, 23.8% for art projects, 16.4% for projects combining art and research and 0.5% for other cultural work.

Award rates in the general grant call of 2022

Calculated from the total number of applications, 5.4% of the applicants were awarded a grant.

  • The award rate for research projects was 7.5%.
  • The award rate for art projects was 4.3%.
  • The award rate for projects combining art and research was 5.5%.
  • The award rate for other cultural work was 2.1%.

In the general grant application round, 7.2% of the total sum applied for was granted.

  • The award rate for research projects was 9.2%. 
  • The award rate for art projects was 4.6%.
  • The award rate for projects combining art and research was 8.0%.
  • The award rate for other cultural work was 0.9%.

Thematic grant call 2022

In connection with the general call of 2022, the Foundation’s thematic grant call The current state and challenges of Finnish democracy was organised. It is the second round of applications for the funding programme Is Democracy Eroding? The application round resulted in EUR 3,981,400 of grants being awarded to a total of 22 initiatives. Kone Foundation’s Board of Trustees decided on the grants on 2 December 2022.

Applications to the Saari Residence

A total of 27 artists and 10 working groups were selected for the Saari Residence in 2022 out of 580 applications received from 72 countries. The award rate for residency places was 6.2% out of the total number of applicants. Kone Foundation’s Board of Trustees decided on the residency grants on 3 June 2022.
