Residency artists and researchers Painting, drawing, printmaking Mirimari Väyrynen Visual Artist I approach the theme of landscape through man’s relationship with the world and nature. A landscape is an identity and a self portrait, yet simultaneously the works, conjured from elements of the forest, take a stand on global environmental issues and ponder the phenomena and values of our time. A landscape is a view and a place. It is a personal environment and an experienced living space. It conceals within it collective historical time and the dimensions of events: social and cultural strata. I deconstruct and build landscapes. In my work, the motives of the forest fall apart into small pieces and what remains is reconstructed into a new sum of its parts, a remoulded forest and landscape. The environment is in constant flux and through the processive nature of landscapes I examine the themes of life and the cycle of nature. At the Saari Residence, I will focus on a new series of coloured paintings in which I will strive to create movement, the vibrations of a forest on the canvas. I will then tear apart and break the painted canvasses in order to later reassemble the pieces into new works. I also greatly look forward to spending time in the forest, which is both a part of the artistic process and an opportunity to broaden my thoughts and dream up new works.
