Residency artists and researchers Multidisciplinary art Visual Atlas of the American Monster Workgroup: Carlos Zerpa, Rodrigo García, Laura Devia, Adriana Domínguez and Jose Cáceres We are a transdisciplinary group of artists, designers, historians and curators. Together we are developing a project called Visual Atlas of the American Monster (VAAM), which investigates a series of cases in which indigenous groups from Latin America have been characterised as “terrorists” in recent years for defending their territories and resources. Echoing the style and format of XVI century Atlas depicting the colonisers’ accounts of the New World, the VAAM presents a collection of “monstrous indigenous people of the Americas”. However, instead of having a taxonomic and exoticizing intention, the VAAM reappropriates the figure of the monster with the intention of positioning itself in solidarity with indigenous resistances. During our residency at Saari, we are working on the first phase of the project, which includes developing the first monster as a pilot case. Through an intense collective process of research and discussions, we aim to understand the conceptual direction and specific needs of the project. Our team is composed by Carlos Zerpa (curator, producer and initiator of the project), Rodrigo García (artist and illustrator), Laura Devia (historian and researcher), Adriana Domínguez (curator) and Jose Cáceres (historian and researcher). Carlos, Rodrigo and Laura are members of Mecha Coop, a Venezuela-based animation cooperative. Adriana and Jose are curators of the independent art space la_cápsula in Switzerland.
