We intend to spend our time at the Saari Residence working on a new animation based on the symbolism of Skolt Sámi craft and multilingual audio recordings. Our work centres around gentle listening and visual observation, which make it possible to experience the language and symbolism of Skolt Sámi without necessarily understanding them. We explore how something can be both visible or audible and yet keep its meaning hidden.

This residency is an opportunity for us to deepen our collaboration, which began in 2022, to explore new ways of combining sound and animation and to look further into the future. We plan to experiment with ways to synchronise sound and animation, and explore what we can convey about the quality and materiality of craft through digital image and sound. This will involve alternating between digital and handmade, and working together to better understand animations, recordings and texts by creators who intrigue us.

Tuuli Malla is a sound and performance artist whose work is often inspired by listening to places and people.

Erja Taskinen is a multicultural visual artist who is fascinated by the ability of visual language to reassure or mislead.

The latest joint installation of Malla and Taskinen (with Tero Harju), Kueʹtt, was featured in the Oulu Art Museum and Kunsthalle Helsinki in 2024–2025.
