Residency artists and researchers Multidisciplinary art Santtu Laine Multidisciplinary Artist Photo: Jussi Virkkumaa I am currently developing a new body of work examining the complex relationship between humans and nature, seeking to weave connections between the two. These connections take form as bioplastic sculptures made from seaweed, accompanied by sound and moving image. The outcome and mode of presentation remain open—an uncertainty I am keen to embrace and explore during my time at the Saari residency. My aim is to experiment with forms and rhythms that will bring together sculpture, sound, and moving image into a coherent whole. Process-based experimentation shapes all of my work. Each project is driven by hands-on material research, letting the natural properties of bioplastics and other renewable materials guide the creative direction. My thinking process is most productive when working with my hands – assembling ideas much like a puzzle, through trial, error, and attentive exploration. Santtu Laine is a Finnish multidisciplinary artist based in Helsinki, Finland. His practice spans installation, sculpture, photography, moving image, and sound, with a strong focus on exploring alternative and sustainable methods of art-making. He frequently works with bioplastics derived from seaweed, emphasizing the creative potential of renewable, non-hydrocarbon materials.
