A Two-Part Bird-Themed Discussion and Workshop Series

  • Wednesday 1 April, 5.30–7.30 p.m.
  • Wednesday 8 April, 5.30–7.30 p.m.

Saareke Community Space
Keskuskatu 20, Mynämäki

At the Saari Residence’s community space, Saareke, you can learn about the state of birdlife during a discussion evening and take part in a follow-up workshop. You are warmly welcome – just as you are!

Could You Become a Bird Protector?

On Wednesday, 1 April, 5.30–7.30 p.m., we will explore the alarming state of bird populations. The number of endangered bird species is increasing, and bird populations are declining across many habitats. It is distressing to observe this trend: according to the 2021 State of Birds in Finland report, as many as every second breeding bird species in Finland is currently on the Red List.

Former Executive Director of the Turku Animal Welfare Association, Britt-Marie Juup, and Chair of the Ornithological Society of Turku, Suvi Riihiluoma, will discuss—moderated by Minna Hautio—topics including the decline of bird populations, changes in habitats, bird deaths caused by window collisions, ways to prevent them, and wildlife welfare more broadly. An open discussion will follow the panel discussion.

The aim is to highlight the threats facing birds and, above all, to present practical ways in which each of us can help prevent unnecessary bird deaths.

The event will be held in Finnish and is open to all. Refreshments provided.

On Wednesday, 8 April, 5.30–7.30 p.m., we will host a workshop exploring different ways to reduce bird-window collisions.

According to a 2021 estimate, millions of birds die annually in Finland. The most significant human-caused cause of death is collision with windows. While these deaths cannot be completely prevented, there are effective ways to reduce them.

In this open workshop, led by Saari Residence Community Artist Pia Bartsch, participants can try out various methods to make windows safer for birds. We will explore practical prevention techniques, create dense patterns on windows using ultraviolet markers, and apply anti-collision tape. Together, we will design and implement the window patterns. After the workshop, participants may keep their UV markers.
