SWAMP collects reusable items from art institutions, individuals, and businesses in one location and makes them accessible to other art workers for free. A large quantity of reusable materials ends up in waste sites after exhibitions and events. Art institution staff members make efforts to donate leftover materials to artists; however, this requires extra time, work, and effort, which is often difficult to organize due to schedule and storage limitations. As a result, a large amount of materials from exhibition venues end up being discarded. Our main aim is to ensure that recycling in artistic production is accessible, free, simple, and integrated into regular practices. Through the project we reduce the environmental impact of the art field by promoting material reuse in artistic production. The second aim is to offer free access to materials, support the livelihoods of art workers and strengthen the financial sustainability of artists and arts organisations, making artistic creation more accessible and sustainable. Both are urgent today, given environmental challenges and recent cuts to arts funding in Finland. Overall, our circular economy approach helps build a more resilient local arts community while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of cultural production. The materials bank provides materials for free to artists and organisations. Institutions, artists and other creative professionals use the materials in their work and are encouraged to donate unused items back to the bank. The cycle follows clear principles: we prioritise reuse over disposal and keep access open and free for all visitors. Back to Grants listing
