In the West, caregiving often falls heavily on individuals, particularly those doing invisible reproductive labor. But now, they’ve found an unexpected ally: the orcas of the Mediterranean. Together, they are resisting. Through the lens of three caregiving communities – a women’s choir, a pod of orcas, and a motorcycle gang of nurses – AFTERCARE examines the emotional and planetary landscape of burnout. This non-linear documentary roams the globe like a satellite, gathering fragments of resistance and glimpses of potential futures. It blends absurdity with surprising connections, challenging our perception of care as an individual problem. The story unfolds through two narrators: a menopausal Earth and a futuristic pirate radio station. Radio Cetacean’s “call-in-show" offers a space for imagined communities, envisioning more sustainable paths to caregiving. Back to Grants listing
