Anna Tahkola

In my work, I explore the Earth’s deep time, a speculative future and humanity as part of planetary processes. I draw, sculpt, create performance art and write.

At the Saari Residence, I will explore the area by walking, biking and paddling without following any preplanned routes. Alongside my wandering, I sketch, read and write, and work on an essayistic solo performance as part of my artistic research.

For me, walking is a form of physical and spatial thinking. I examine the cycle and transformation of matter, as well as the simultaneity of different temporal durations. I investigate how scientific knowledge about a place and solitude alter perception.

I develop my methodology in light of, among other things, the concept of “drifting”, or dérive, as formulated by the Situationist International and Guy Debord. I explore an oceanic experience in which the boundaries of the self seem to dissolve into the environment.

In my ecofeminist work, I want to nurture curiosity and love for the Earth, a fascination with the unknown, and even a sense of falling in love with places, forests, cliffs and the sea.
