Kana Wakareno

During my residency at Saari, I will explore the waters and small aquatic environments around the residence through field observation, sound recording and moving image. I am particularly interested in underwater sound and in aspects of these environments that are difficult to perceive directly.

This research will form the basis of a new work, The orchestra of sorrows from the water, combining piano, voice, environmental recordings and moving image. Rather than using the materials gathered in the field simply as background or documentation, I want to explore how they can become part of the musical and audiovisual structure of the work itself.

I hope to spend much of the residency exploring the surrounding environment and developing the work through observation, recording and experimentation. While I have already developed an initial framework for the project, I want to leave room for what I actually encounter at Saari to influence its direction and form.

I am also looking forward to exchanging ideas with artists from different fields and having a concentrated period of time to work on the project.

Kana Wakareno is a Japanese composer, vocalist, pianist and videographer working across music and moving image. Her practice often begins with the observation and investigation of natural and physical phenomena, which she develops into musical and audiovisual works.

She is particularly interested in phenomena that cannot be fully understood through direct observation alone, and uses field recording, moving image and other methods to extend the process of observation. Rather than presenting these materials as documentation, she transforms them through composition and artistic interpretation.
