Open house day in the Saari Residence

The open day is part of a series of events of the 10th anniversary of the Saari Residence. During the day, you can enjoy art, familiarise yourself with the yard and the history of the buildings, and participate in various workshops.

You are warmly welcome to celebrate spring and the Saari Residence with us!

In collaboration with the Saari Residence and the Nature Conservation Association of Mynämäki–Mietoinen.

Programme

Preliminary programme

At 11:30 am
Welcome speech – Leena Kela, the Executive Director of the Saari Residence.

At noon
In the main building of the Saari Residence, PhD Riitta Koskinen gives a lecture on the topic Life in the Saari Manor during the days of Count J. F. Aminoff in the early 19th century. The lecture discusses the constructional phases of the Saari Manor in the early 19th century as well as the life of family Aminoff in more detail. The lecture is in Finnish. Duration: 40 minutes.

Between 1:00 pm and 1:45 pm
A guided tour, during which architect Antti Nyman presents the building history of the Saari Manor. The tour leaves from the front of the main building.

Between 1:30 pm and 2:00 pm
Juha Valkeapää
and Juhani Liimatainen: Linnut (Birds) concert. Sound art in the manor park.

Between 2:00 pm and 2:45 pm, 3:30 pm and 4:15 pm
A guided walking tour, during which the artwork of the Saari Residence are presented. The tour is given by the Saari alumnus, author and art historian Antti Kauppinen. The tour leaves from the front of the main building.

At 2 pm, 3 pm and 4 pm
The Saari Residence Invited Artist, translator Kristiina Drews reads the novel A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin. A Manual for Cleaning Women is a collection of short stories by the American writer Lucia Berlin. Published posthumously in 2015, the book was received enthusiastically by both critics and readers. The book gained a lot of attention also in Finland when its translation by Drews was published in the autumn 2017.

Between 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm
Nina Rantala
, visual artist and Tuija Kokkonen, artist and researcher, will discuss about Rantala’s community art project Olemme eläimiä (We Are Animals) where participants identified themselves as animals in the forest. Ranala worked as the the first community artist in the Saari Residence. Also photographs about the project by photographer Yehia Eweis are shown during the discussion.

Between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm
O’DD, a performance by circus artist Rauli Dahlberg, who worked in the Saari Residence last autumn. A contemporary-circus performance by Dahlberg and Sauli Kosonen, O’DD combines circus and architecture to a work where a person recreates themselves in a dream. It is an adventure story about humanity in the grips of gravity, where the laws of physics are both utilised and escaped.

MORE IN THE MANOR AND PARK AREA

A birdhouse workshop outside the stone barn under the guidance of the Nature Conservation Association of Mynämäki–Mietoinen.

Annika Tavasti and Anu Taivainen hold an ecological workshop for children and the childlike at the old laudry house throughout the day.

Martta Tuomaala’s FinnCycling Soumi-Perkele! installation at the manor’s barn. FinnCycling-Soumi-Perkele! is a spinning-spirited exercise bike session, where work and Finnish budget-cut politics are tackled. The viewer can participate in the artist’s exercise session by pedalling the exercise bike.

During the day, coffee is available outside the main building, and small snacks are served in the machinery hall.

PS: Do you need a ride from Turku or Helsinki?

We offer bus transportation from Turku and Helsinki. The buses leave from the central railway station in Turku and the Mikonkatu charter bus platform by the Railway Square in Helsinki. The bus transportation is free-of-charge, but a binding registration for the transport is required. Cancellations must be notified at the latest on the previous day. Please remember to give your name, e-mail address and phone number when you register for the transportation. Registration is possible for only one person at a time. There are limited seats available and we give any cancelled seats to those on the reserve list.
