Statistics and listings of grants, prizes and donations 2018

In 2018, Kone Foundation awarded grants, prizes and donations totalling EUR 28 million.

The amount of 28 million euro includes the following funding:

  • General grant call, EUR 22,326,625
  • Saari Residence grants (incl. Artist at risk, Invited artist), EUR 284,446
  • Lauttasaari Manor residence grants (incl. the pilot call), EUR 49,970
  • Vuoden Tiedekynä prize for 2018, EUR 25,000
  • Other grants in 2018, e.g. Dictionary of Old Literary Finnish at the National Language Centre, EUR 1,062,000, and Mad House ry:n ystävät, EUR 300,000

General grant call

A total of EUR 22,3 million and 251 grants were awarded through the general grant call in 2018. Decisions on grants to be awarded were taken by the Board of Trustees on 30 November 2018.

A total of 5,577 applications were submitted for the application round of 1 to 15 September. There is a total of 251 grant recipients; individuals, work groups, or organisations. Over 600 people work in the projects funded.

Of the EUR 22,3 million granted, 61,7 % was awarded for scholarly projects, 15,5 % for art projects, 16,7 % for projects linking research and art, and 0,3 % for other cultural projects.

Award rates in the general call

  • 4,5 % of the applications received a grant in the general grant application round.
  • The award rate for research projects was 6,1.
  • The award rate for art projects was 3,3.
  • The award rate for projects linking research and art was 5,8.
  • The award rate for other cultural work was 0,5.
  • In relation to the number of euros applied for, the overall award rate was 5,5.
  • The award rate for research projects was 6,7.
  • The award rate for art projects was 3,4.
  • The award rate for projects linking research and art was 6,9.
  • The award rate for other cultural work was 0,3.

Theme-based grant call: Our vital neighbours

A total of 24 grants and 3,8 million euros were awarded for the ‘Our vital neighbours’ grant call. The award rate was 8,7 of the number of applications and 10,5 of the number of applications in euro. Decisions on grants to be awarded were taken by the Board of Trustees on 30 November 2018.

Saari Residence

A total of 25 artists and 15 working groups were selected for the Saari Residence in 2018. A total of 516 applications were made from 57 different countries. The award rate for residency places is 9,6 of the number of applicants. Decisions on residencies to be awarded were taken by the Kone Foundation Board of Trustees on 22 October 2018.

In addition, the Saari Residence granted an Invited Artist Residence and an ‘Artist at risk’ safe residencies in 2018.

Lauttasaari Manor Residence

In total, 20 applications were made for the Lauttasaari Manor Residence and grants were awarded for 2 of these. Decisions on grants to be awarded were taken by the Board of Trustees on 30 November 2018.
