Writer Ayobami Adebayo 4 800 € The Daughters

While in residence, I hope to work on sections of a novel which is tentatively titled The Daughters. The Daughters' primary preoccupation will be with four sisters who take care of their mother in turns as she succumbs to degenerative eventualities of Alzheimer's disease. Through their narratives which will take the form of letters, diary entries and social media posts, the women confront their resentments towards their mother, each other and their only brother--their mother's favoured child who was murdered as a teenager. Although this novel will focus on the intimate details of a family’s grief and loss, it will also interrogate the preference for male children in quite a number of Nigerian families. At the moment, this project is in the conceptual stage as I’m completing another novel. However, by the time I hope to be in residence, I expect to have more clarity about its particulars and direction. One of the four sections of this novel will be made up entirely of social media posts in a deliberate attempt to create and communicate a consciousness primarily through a persona's engagements via social media. Some of these will include the youngest daughter's flower photography. Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti

Sarjakuvataiteilija Mari Ahokoivu 4 800 € Misofoniasta kertovan verkkosarjakuvan työstäminen

Misofoniasta kertovassa sarjakuvassa kerrotaan henkilökohtaisia kokemuksia misofonian, ns. ääniherkkyyden, kanssa elämisestä sekä faktatietoa syndroomasta. Misofoniaa kärsivä ihminen on neurofysiologisesti herkistynyt tietyille äänille, tavallisesti mm. syömisen äänet aiheuttavat raivo-reaktioita. Yksi sarjakuvan päätavoitteista on levittää tietoa misofoniasta ja antaa vertaistukea. Sarjakuvassa tulee olemaan paljon huumoria, mustaakin sellaista.

Performance artist Vera Boitcova 4 800 € Tales of Transformation

It is a video/live performance and archive project that explores the possibility of transforming personal and shared traumas into fairytales filled with digital ghosts and video-twins. This project is a form of healing through creative expression, deliberate exaggeration, and looking at trauma (or any important experience) from a different angle. It is meant to be narrated live, and be accompanied by a variety of video-characters projected on a surface – all written, designed, played and filmed by the same author. With this project I aim to adopt a more careful and gentle approach to working with troubling personal narratives. I have already written and filmed some of my stories, and now I plan to expand by collaborating with other willing participants through a series of workshops that will take place in 2019. The final goal is to create a communal interactive fairytale book that can be updated whenever a new participant arrives. The planned outcome is the following 3 things: - a series of video/live performances based on real stories re-worked as fairy tales; - a youtube archive of videos used in these performances; - a web-library of tales, each accompanied by a video and photos. Another aim of this project is to explore the ways in which live performance can be merged with video subsequently allowing to create multiple characters with just one performer, and to work in different settings without using props and changing actual stage sets. I think it is bold because it urges to talk about sensitive subjects, but in a more subtle and gentle way. I want myself and other people to be able to share and open up without being pressured into baring their souls. I believe that my approach can make a personal traumatic experience more universally recognizable and accessible. It also challenges conventions of storytelling, by mixing digital technology with live performance, allowing to present a story from different perspectives. Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti Zdenka Brungot Svíteková 5 600 € AS WE TOUCH - informing and reforming the body

My intention is to zoom more in depth and with a critical approach into the role of senses, especially touch, in somatic practices and the ways these various methods are distilled into creative processes. The touch has long time been inherently present in my practice and within the recent work dealing with tectonics and micro tectonics of matter, the need to understand the workings of touch became a necessity. A necessity for in depth comprehension, in theory as well as in practice, of the workings of touch underpinned by contemporary philosophy and sociocultural studies. Besides my own research, I decided to address peers practicing various somatic approaches. The question has been “What body were they creating and what was the specificity of ‘their’ touch?” investigating the outcomes, their expressive potential as well as the re-entactment of the outcomes. During the residency I want to focus on 1) producing written materials by processing interviews with colleagues. The vision is to create platform for critical reflection and prepare a curatorial concept of a symposium on touch 2) starting the creation of a new dance piece with sense of touch and its nuances as guidelines. The work will be the crossroad where the two previous aspects meet, supported by my own practice and the ground breaking work of Erin Manning: Politics of Touch: Sense, Movement, Sovereignty. Addressing nuances, gentle perceptions and micro scales of effort might at times be experienced as a bold initiative requiring courage. I believe as artists, and often body therapists, we have the responsibility to critically reflect on the question what body are we creating and what kind of touch is at play? As makers and/or performers we have the possibility to bring forth a nuanced understanding of the senses and their role foregrounding the sensing body's intervention into the sociocultural. freelance composer/conductor Sara Caneva 4 800 € "Eclipse" - visual cues and soundscape orchestration

The core of my compositional thoughts is the sound quality, declined in many branches of the listening perception, also in relation to the gestures that produce sound and to the environment. "Eclipse" is an opera project for singing soloists, choir, one percussionist and electronics. The opera's plot deals with an old man seeing his first total solar eclipse, and the impact of this phenomenon on his repressed painful memories. Essential musical components in the opera are a Nordic sea soundscape and a sea soundscape from the north-east of Italy described in the novel “Eclissi” by E. Sinigaglia. The soundscapes lead the narrative from a subjective point of view; the choir will take the place of instruments and will serve not as a words speaker, but as a tool for soundscape orchestration. My residency will go through 2 phases: in the first month, I will make recordings of the local soundscape, analyze the recordings; in the second month, I will compose a preliminary excerpt of the final work. While this, I will also deepen the concept of auditive perception in full darkness, since darkness is a meaningful theme in "Eclipse". During the residency, I would like to test "blind concerts", i.e. performance situations in which both audience and players act in complete darkness. The absence of visual cues influences the acoustic perception: on this topic, I will lead a study and sketch scores to find effective potential and practical applications in dramatic and musical contexts. The peculiarity of this initiative is also its participatory side: besides my individual work time, I will propose to schedule a few sessions of collective recordings and organize a few short blind concerts with subsequent shared feedback, as part of my research and preliminar to the actual opera. Artist Isaac Chong Wai 4 800 € Re-enactment of Dictators' Death

"Re-enactment of Dictators' Death" is a project investigating the memorialisation, commemorative methodologies and historiography of the death of dictators as a stigmatic historicity, while, through artistic practice, using the re-enactment as a means to remember how we shouldn't forget for the future. The research focuses on the historical fact of how dictators have died, the relevant memorials or monuments and the reaction of the public after the decease announcement of dictators. Regarding the artistic practice, I am used to create installation and performance responding to the research such as creating a monument without the body of the dictator but only the uniform, or leaving blank the names of the dictator in the newspaper where the name was mentioned on newspaper concerning the demise. Dictatorship is not only an issue of the past, but of today's societies. There is an urge to affirm values which are constantly shifting. Art would be able to serve as a means to rethink and reexamine how contemporary reality can be imagined, and what we shouldn't forget in order not to make the same mistake in history from the future. Visual artist Pedro Hurpia 4 800 € Hidden and Missing Things

The main idea of this project at the Saari Residence is the manipulation of an archaic scientific instrument with the purpose of activating relations between the local enviroment, beliefs and the human being who manipulates it. Using artistic strategies of creation, I organize real and fictitious documents, trying to create narrative and visual logics that flirt with the fields of geophysics and divining methods. The archaic instrument will be wooden dowsing rods of varying sizes found in the surrounds of the Residence. ‘Dowsing is an unexplained process in which people use a forked twig to find missing and hidden objects. Dowsing, also known as divining and doodlebugging, is often used to search for water or missing jewelry, but it is also often employed in other applications including ghost hunting, crop circles and fortunetelling.’ Based on this definition, I am interested in the particularity of an 'inexplicable' functioning tool that oscillates between popular belief and science. The idea of a divining tool or a device that can find - with some accuracy - missing and hidden things, can bring me poetic narratives and a rich material to be developed in the period of the Residence. My goal is to create situations of ‘looking-for’ and ‘persistence’ with the use of this object, having popular belief and science as drivers of this action. The personal search for something invisible or lost, whether material or immaterial. I believe that this is a bold proposal at the moment that I trace an unexpected combination between art, divining and doodlebugging. Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti

Creative Producer/Artist Jennifer Katanyoutanant and Artist Grace Wong 10 400 € "Home" Cooked

Food is as migratory as the people who eat it. ‘Traditional’ cuisine is not always comprised of ingredients local to the region. The modern pizza is Italian in origin, but tomatoes came from the Aztecs. American hot dogs came from German style wieners, but the act of stuffing ground meat into casings goes all the way back to the ancient Sumerians and Chinese. This contradictory notion of foreign ingredients in traditional local cuisine call into question the origin stories of ‘authentic’, regional food, and what defines authenticity. “Home” Cooked is a physical manifestation of how distinct cultural traditions have been founded upon a longstanding history of global exchange and migration. It looks at how a foreign ingredient makes its way into a new country and integrates into a region’s existing food vocabulary. At the Saari Residency, we will research the origin stories of several key dishes from the Varsinais-Suomi region, and trace back the routes of how imports such as rye, potatoes, and coffee ended up as daily staples in the Finnish diet. After our two week research period, we will design and test a game that tests player associations with ‘Finnish’ ingredients. Our goal is to create new associations by serving different methods of preparing the same food from other countries. At its core, our game opens up a dialogue on how food acts as an ambassador between regions, highlighting distinct flavors different places bring despite using the same ingredients. Beyond sustainability, “Home” Cooked reconnects Finland to its history of appropriated agricultural traditions. As of 2017, 6.8% of Finland’s population are foreign born. Approximately 373,325 people drive demand for ‘home’ ingredients such as lemongrass, unavailable in Finland. We look at the potential negative impacts of importing food, and reducing resulting environmental impacts. Having a better understanding of food, authenticity, and cultural heritage will resolve some of these conflicts. Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti

Poet, translator, editor Jazra Khaleed 5 600 € Haya said

“Haya said” is a poetic dialogue written in Greek between my mother (a Muslim immigrant who came to Greece in the ’80s from Chechnya), two Syrian refugees (a female and a male rapper), and a Greek newscaster. With this work, I intend to demonstrate that poets –especially those of us whose voice is heard beyond the borders of Greece– can use poetry to address the recent economic and social crisis in Greece and Europe, and speak about the struggle of immigrants and refugees from the Middle and Near East who try to make their way to northern Europe. Drawing on the Greek political poetry traditions of the anti-junta movement of the ’60s and ’70s as well as on hip hop and the language of young second-generation immigrants living in Athens, I intend to create a polyvocal poetic work that speaks about immigration, trauma and the impoverishment of life in Greece, but also about the promise of a new life and the hope of a better future. I will spend the first two weeks of the residency doing research on immigration, and the Syrian civil war and I will dedicate the following six weeks to writing. While immigration is more and more subject to contentious political debate in Europe, poets rarely address this issue. With the proposed project, I intend to demonstrate that we poets can present through our art a new reading of the reality of immigration, challenge the anti-immigrant narrative, and create a basis for oppositional readings of xenophobia as expressed in news reports, social media, advertising, public documents, etc. Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti

Designer in Residence Ray LC 5 600 € Going for Broke: the Faces of Networked Intelligence.

As humans we tolerate bad designs by going around them, avoiding streets with confusing parking signs, deleting autocorrected words. We treat our machines the same, assuming that if they behave badly, it’s by design, so we find them cute and silly. How bad do machines have to perform until we believe that they are broken? I’ll install 2 large machines that are flaky and shy, using the audience’s face and brain wave data to guide their actions, until they finally suspect that its reactions are flawed. One is a lighting system that follows faces in the crowd, lighting up areas in the room where faces are by moving between them. When faces come close to the machine, it moves away. Over time lighting of faces become random, lighting random areas of the room, forming suspect audiences. Finally it looks to the back of the room even when no audience is close, as if broken. The 2nd machine is on-screen-face display that measures attention level using NeuroSkyEEG headset. It imitates viewer’s actions by face-tracking using computer-vision. When attention levels are low (low EEG-beta-bandwidths), the face moves closer in style to previously GAN-machine-learned bored face. When attention’s high, the face moves closer to the learned alert face. Over time the mode moves away from EEG attention measures and morphs into other shapes spontaneously as in Deep Dream. Finally it crystallizes into a laughing face that stares perpetually at the viewer, looking like it’s broken. Artificial Intelligence has been applied to finance and medicine, but their use in creative expression is unexplored. We explore unexpected interactions with machines: lamps aren’t supposed to look away; computer faces aren’t supposed to mimic brain states. They inspire view of AI as creative machines that appear to be expressive because they subvert human expectations. These works show ability for smart machines that sense us using computer vision and EEG to surprise, entertain, and delude us. Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti

Visual artist, editor Scriptings Achim Lengerer 7 000 € Editing sessions for Scriptings#50: Learning "by heart"
- A multilingual library for Nelly Sachs

Residency aim: The aim of the residency is to put together and finish the editing process for a publication of the recent project Scriptings#50: Learning "by heart"
- A multilingual library for Nelly Sachs (a collaboration with Niina Lehtonen Braun). The publication will consist of various translations of Nelly Sachs' poem “In deep flight” as well as a set of drawings by Niina Lehtonen Braun. The publication will be published as an imprint at the international art publisher “Archive Books” as well as made available as a digital publication by “Eeclectic-Digital publishing for Visual Culture”. The proposed poem by Nelly Sachs addresses urgent political questions of flight, migration and humanity. In the current climate in Europe and elsewhere it feels necessary to make a statement or better statements in as many languages as possible. In deep flight, what grand reception is underway— .... for he must go on from fin to wing and beyond— ... In place of home I behold the world’s chrysalis Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti

Onko soolo yhden ihmisen esitys?

Hakusana "algorithmic libretto" tuottaa verkossa yhden ainoan hakutuloksen. Artist, PhD student Anthea Moys 5 600 € Trickster Tactics: Playing with the Rules

Over the past decade, I have created a diverse body of performance work that adopts a playful approach and a desire to create art that is inclusive, participatory and inspires a sense of agency in the world. Growing up in post-apartheid South Africa, one of the aims of my practice is to inspire a sense of empathetic human interconnectedness through play. In 2013 I created a project called “Anthea Moys vs the City of Grahamstown” that, through a series of contests where I single-handedly challenged several teams to their own games, attempted to collectively reimagine winning as the act of learning from and with instead of conquest over another. In line with my current practice-as-research PhD, the two practices developed in the UK and South Africa will foster new interdisciplinary and culturally diverse dialogues and aim to highlight the potential this work has for deeper human connectivity and transformation. The Saari residency will allow me to reflect on these practices and experiment further with peers in the practical and theoretical exploration of the liberating qualities of play in relation to the rule-bound characteristics of sport through performance. if playing the game in sport is not only about winning, what new role can sport play in the world today and how can the performing arts be used as a tool to investigate this? Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this practice-as-research project boldly asks us to engage in the often over-looked and under-valued medium of play. Whilst sport inspires finite players, players set on winning and ending the game, the arts inspire infinite players, players set on playing to continue the play. In the current social and political climate, it seems more urgent than ever for there to be fewer passive spectators and more active embodied players in the world. On your marks... Mag. art, visual artist Leonhard Müllner 4 800 € How to disappear

How to Disappear deals with the topic of disobedience and the untold history of desertion within the material of online shooters set. Me and my collective Total Refusal creates ingame lecture performances based on texts dealing with war, objection and a research with the help of diaries, articles and studies of deserteurs from the First and Second world war to the Vietnam- and the Iraq war. Alongside the video game sequels Battlefield readers will be present in the game as avatars, and thus a large experimental part of the project lies in the unknown component of player interaction. The result will be captured in a short film. By appropriating the ingame voice chat, we will confront players with a series of curated literature excerpts. Readers will join both opposing players teams simultaneously and will be physically represented within the game world by their avatars. The lectures are then superimposed over the fictional entertainment landscape; they interlace with this audio-visual gratification machine; sincere voices fade into the delight of distraction. The readers aren’t supposed to be mere spoilsports; they are deserters, hijacking their fellow players from the fields of battle. “How To Disappear” is not intended as a paternalistic, moralistic performance, but rather one that appropriates the battlefield and the combatants as a stage and its audience and co-performers. Acknowledging that this media is currently not realizing its cultural potential, Total Refusal aims to appropriate digital game spaces and put them to new use. Moving within games but casting aside the intended gameplay (and thus player behavior), we rededicate these fantastic resources to new activities and narratives, looking to create public spaces with a critical potential. Filosofian maisteri, ohjaaja, klovni Taina Mäki-Iso 7 000 € Klovneriasta kirjoittaminen

Klovneria on kohtaamisen taidetta.

Writer/Editor/Instructor of Composition Noor Naga 4 800 € Can the Centre Romance the Edge?

Using research on post-colonial space theory and American cultural imperialism, I intend to complete this 40,000-word manuscript, American Boy and Girl from Shobrakheit, which explores the politics of romance between cultural centers and cultural peripheries, and how that intersects with gender. There are enough works of fiction that explore the classic diasporic experience of being ethnically marked “other,” a subaltern within a particular Western hegemony. But this manuscript explores the power of that same individual in a third world context, in other words, moving that same racialized minority from an American backdrop back to a Middle Eastern one, where she must reckon with her power and privilege as a first-world citizen.

Suuri osa Länsi-Saharan nomadeista, saharaweista, on joutunut pakolaisiksi kotimaansa fosfaattikaivosten vuoksi lähes asuinkelvottomaan ympäristöön Algerian Saharaan. Myrkyllinen sinilevä on tuttu merkki rehevöitymisen vaikutuksista.

“Humanity will become extinct. We need to design an elegant ending.” (Paola Antonelli) Uusi teos kulkee työnimellä “Designing the End” ja käsittelee nyky-ihmisen obsessiota kuviteltua kuolemaansa kohtaan. Hankkeemme on suunnattu ihmiskunnalle.

Musician Sara Pajunen 4 800 € Mine Songs: Sounding an Altered Landscape

MINE SONGS is a long-term project by Sara Pajunen that explores the altered landscape of Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range through sound, image, and historical research. Manufactured sound is labeled as noise pollution, and there is no doubt that the prevalence of ambient noise is changing our world. Noise is defined as an 'unwanted' sound. For our health, can we make a choice periodically to 'want' the sound? Each sonic occurrence contains musical properties: pitch, rhythm, dynamic, duration - even timbre and sometimes harmony. What happens if we start to listen to these vibrations as music? How does our interaction with the sound shift? Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti

Kuvataiteilija Perttu Saksa 5 600 € Asetelmavalokuvien työstäminen märkälevytekniikalla Saaren kartanon luonnonläheisyyttä ja miljöötä hyödyntäen.

Suunnitelmanani on syventyä työskentelemään 1800-luvun märkälevyvalokuvan tekniikalla Saaren kartanon luonnonläheisyyttä ja miljöötä hyödyntäen. Olen työskennellyt vanhoilla analogisilla valokuvatekniikoilla digitaalisen kuvantekemisen rinnalla muutamien vuosien ajan.

Master of Arts and Film Ginta Vasermane 5 600 € “There and then or poetics of space”

In residency would like to create installation work with working title “There and then or poetics of space”, work will discover sensitivity to places, spaces, language, and literature, belongings, imagination, and identity. I will work with local people in Finland and ask them to select their favorite poem or story (or rather their own made stories). I will recreate these stories in theatrical mise-en-scène on video filmed around Finland. Depending on story or poem I will make theatrical scenes with actors or with local people, who would be interested. Poetry uses forms and conventions to suggest a differential interpretation to words or to evoke emotive responses. Devices such as rhythm, assonance are sometimes used to achieve musical or poetic effects. The use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations. Similarly figures of speech create a resonance between otherwise disparate images - a layering of meanings, forming connections previously not perceived. Work result will be multilayer installation consisting of videos, photos, notes from inhabitants and self-made book (with locals) out of selected poems or stories. With my films I try to create an existence, with its own rules and logic, even while some of sceneries at first can seem rather absurd. In the meantime it’s a reflection on society and the conditions under which people live in social contexts. Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti

PHD candidate (Art History and Theory - UniKassel) Lorena Vicini 4 800 € Decolonising Kone Foundation

This project pursues the idea about what “decolonizing art institutions” can mean and to investigate institutional approaches, procedures and ways of acting that can point to another possibility of institutional modus operandi. Throughout the residence period, the research will approach the modus operandi of the institution to seek to understand the values that guide the strategies, and to what extent they are reflected in the practice, in the day to day and in the bodies. In addition to thinking of specific facts as genders equally represented in the institution or if they are equally in charge, or the representation of other nationalities, for example, the research proposes to think of other ways of relating within the institution. At the end of the period of residence, the project proposal is to deliver a printed version of a publication on the analysis to all employees and artists involved in the process. Thinking that the institution itself, as apparatus, already translates eurocentric epistemologies, the project seeks to offer new perspectives on cultural management that “southly” epistemologies can bring, for example, concepts as "flexibility" and "permeability" into the practice of cultural management and provokes how we can make these alternative epistemologies bring new ways of acting and feeling. Artistic institutions generally assume a desire for decolonization, for diversity, for equality. When, however, we take a deeper look at the institution beyond its programming and go to the analysis of numbers, of processes, the bases are still the same. I therefore believe that the project is bold on both sides: from my side, for seeking to understand in a profound way the modes of operation of the institution, as well as the part of the Kone Foundation, to open to a possibility of change. Translator / subtitler Charlotte Wührer 4 800 € Desire Lines

"Desire Lines" is a flash fiction novella that explores desire lines: shortcuts that pay little heed to established paths, trodden over time by animal and human feet. Desire Lines is made up of short stories that can be read either together, as one cohesive narrative, or separately, as individual and numinous pieces. They deal with encounters between people, explorations of place and evocations of memory, following an unnamed protagonist as she spatially and emotionally navigates a year following a break-up. Collectively, the flash fiction pieces explore attraction to place and people. Like geographical desire lines, the strands of narrative undermine expectations of temporal linearity and are informed by queerness. My intention is to use the time of the residency to complete a full draft of the novella (up to 40,000 words). Another key goal and a focal undertaking of my time at the residency would be to clarify the structure and narrative arc of the novella. I intend to use existing notes and stories and combine these with new flash fiction pieces written at the Saari Residency. Spontaneous composition is a key aspect of my creative approach to writing, and I believe this approach will be an advantage in an unfamiliar setting. In terms of form, the flash fiction novella fuses the concept of a master narrative or story with numinous fragments and is relatively new. There are relatively few precedents, and a lot of scope for experimentation. A core element of the novella is an exploration of LGBTQ issues, which I believe is under-reflected in contemporary literature. Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti

Artist Catherine Sarah Young 5 600 € Ice Chess

Ice Chess explores the Arctic crisis and the potential implications of emerging shipping routes on geopolitical powers, indigenous peoples, and the Global South through the lens of a chess game. The chessboard will be a map combining our knowledge of indigenous lands, Arctic shipping routes, etc., while the pieces will be made of ice. Inside the ice are toy soldiers that represent the countries that have an economic stake on the Arctic, pawns that represent countries that are going to bear the worst effects of a melting Arctic, and figures on the side that represent other geographically affected concerned peoples. While climate change remains a dominant theme in the arts, I believe that it is less common to examine the political forces that govern the melting Arctic. Moreover, it allows the viewer and participant to examine the multiplicity of consequences (and the gray areas) of the Arctic crisis. Jaa Twitter | Facebook | Sähköposti
